Education has come a great distance from ancient times to the post independence era and now to the present times. The Indian subcontinent has been the patron of the greatest education system of the ancient world. The ancient universities like The Nalanda and the Taxila university were way ahead of their times, the alumuni of these eminent universities include the erudites like Pannini, Nagarjuna, Aryadeva and Hieun Tsang. Indian subcontinent was the epicentre of world education. It is not mere vague history, it has it’s concrete testament. The Indian education system was at its pinnacle when the other education systems were still in their cradles.
One of the elementals of this system of education was holistic development, encompassing all areas, intellectual, physical, moral and social. This was one of the major part of the Gurukul culture of India. Value based education was always an integral part.
As we come back to the present, the recently emerging shift in the education pedagogy as well as the recently approved New Education Policy 2020 highlight the gravity of Holistic Development and the significance of instilling in the upcoming progeny, the innate sense to give back to the community and society as a whole.

Nice observation on NEP 2020… Indeed, Indian education system was well developed in ancient times with Gurukul culture. When schools system was not developed by the western world, there were Gurukuls running across India with mix of education and value…

The system get back log some where while technology and economic impact over took the cultural aspects. There are many super talents from Indian universities migrated else where due lack of various support options and slowly cultural and mythological belief get back log. People blindly followed western culture and ignored ancient traditions practices also advancements in medicines that old generations invented and cultivated. Thus the failure started. Can this be restored is a question , answers in practicers hands and minds. Thought provoking material DR N. Respects.
